Abstract

The hydrosol of Zingiber officinale var. Amarum (jahe emprit rhizome) contains active compounds such as flavonoids, tannins, phenols, saponins, and alkaloids, which have the potential to protect the skin against ultraviolet (UV) radiation. This study aims to formulate and evaluate the physical properties of lotion preparations based on jahe emprit rhizome hydrosol in three concentration variations: 30%, 40%, and 50%. The evaluation includes organoleptic tests, homogeneity, spreadability, adhesion, pH, and viscosity. The results of organoleptic and homogeneity tests from all three formulas indicate that the homogeneous preparations have similar color, odor, and form. All lotion preparations met the required standards, with pH values ranging from 7.36±1.42 to 7.75±1.18, and viscosities ranging from 9,947.6±2.25 to 27,035.4±1537.51 cPs. The best spreadability was observed in formula FIII (50%) at 6.07 cm, while the adhesion of all formulas was only 1 second. Statistical tests (Kruskal-Wallis and ANOVA) showed no significant effect of hydrosol concentration variations on the physical properties of the lotion. Thus, FIII is practically the best formula as it provides optimal spreadability, with its pH and viscosity being consistent with the required standards.
